Rodeo is a sport - the sport of the Cowboys and Cowgirls. And just like in many other sports animals are used.
Cowboys and Cowgirls are Horsepeople. So it seems logical to use Horses in their sport too! And like the
name says - Cattle is a major part in the life of a cowboy! Therefore the idea of Bullriding is not as far fetched
as some people claim! So why are some so called animal rights activists agains Rodeo? There is no
reasonable basis, but let`s look at the accusations:
Spurs
Spurs are used to encourage bucking and for better grip. Spurs have been used for years and years in all
sorts of riding activities so why is it a problem in Rodeo all of a sudden?!? Spurs are widely accepted in
todays riding society, so why not in german Rodeo?!? In ERCA/DRSV Bullriding events only taped spurs are
allowed. Considering the thickness of the bulls skin it is almost impossible to hurt the animal in any way!
Animal Welfare
Prods
Cattle prods are not used in Rodeo America events in order to make bulls buck. Also - no efforts are made to
make the animals "wild" behind the scenes before they are loaded into the chutes. As a matter of fact exactly
the opposite is true: The Cowboys need the bull to be calm to get him ready for the ride! It is impossible to set
the rope and get ready to ride on a wild bull in the chutes! Major Rodeos like the PBR or Cheyenne Frontier
Days also do not use the prod in the chutes in order to make the bulls buck! Other Rodeo organisations
however may use a prod to encourage bucking as the bull leaves the chutes. We do not agree with that but
are not responsible for what other people do to their animals. However - according to vets - even the use of a
prod does not hurt the animal. Instead it will give a mild surprise shock, not pain! Please consider that the skin
of a bull is much thicker than human skin and that a bull is much heavier! So what might hurt us does not hurt a
bull!

The Flank strap
The Flank strap is put - like the name suggests - around the bulls flank. A common lie by animal rights activists
is that it is placed around the testicles to make the bulls buck. The truth is that it exists to control the bucking of
the bull. It encourages bucking with the hind legs instead of the front to make it safer for the Cowboy and the
bull! The animals testicles are not involved! People who think otherwise need a lesson in bovine anatomy!
Please look at a bull and where it`s testicles are! They are far behind it`s flanks! How would it the possible to
put the testicles under the flank strap?!? Some people also claim that the flank strap is pulled to tight. Animal
rights groups even publish photos on the net where they make people think that the strap is pulled to tight.
Now apparently those people do not know much about cattle. The bulls flank is one of the smallest parts of it`s
body and the animals skin is about 7 mm thick! The skin of a human is only about 1-2 mm thick!

Some animal rights activists want to ban Rodeo because of the wrongdoings of some Rodeos. Here is a good
illustration: Just because somebody mistreats his dog does not mean all people mistreat their dogs! Does that
mean we all should not be allowed to have dogs anymore? Common sense tells us otherwise!
